The Best Garlic Bread You’ll Ever Eat

Many ago Tony and I started making homemade garlic bread to go with my favorite turkey meatballs.

Of course, a classic, easy spaghetti and meatballs dinner needs garlic bread for dipping so I went on a quest that involved several loaves of bread, chopped garlic, real butter and herbs. It also involved a few stomach aches (hey I’m I’m human and sometimes you can’t stop at one slice)!

But alas, we landed on a delightful, mouth-watering garlic bread recipe that’s 1000x better than the store-bought kind and that I can’t stop making.

This homemade garlic bread recipe with freshly toasted crusty bread slathered in herbed garlic butter will compliment any pasta meal.

Today we’re making some warm homemade garlic bread with freshly toasted slices smothered generously in a drippy, buttery herbed garlic butter. This 5-ingredient recipe uses any Italian or French bread, lots of minced garlic, grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Parmesan cheese and freshly chopped Italian parsley.

For best garlic bread results, the key is to keep the recipe simple and the ratio of butter to garlic just right. We’re using 4-6 cloves of garlic per loaf to load up on that garlicky goodness to pair with your favorite pasta meal. It’s perfect for sopping up any spaghetti or pasta sauce or just for dipping in some marinara. Like these Parmesan garlic knots, garlic bread is a classic side dish to bring to the table for date or pasta night and is really easy to make at home.

Pair it with this cheesy meatball skillet or eggs in purgatory and go nuts dipping into that rustic marinara sauce. Or go with a classic spaghetti meal made with some homemade spaghetti sauce. If you’re planning a special meal or date night, serve it with some fancy lasagna roll ups or spinach and three cheese manicotti. If this sounds tasty, let’s make some garlic bread!

What should I top my garlic bread with?

We kept it simple with flavorful basics in this recipe: a garlic compound butter made from garlic, salt, butter and fresh parsley is slathered over the baguette for an irresistible garlic flavor. But, feel free to experiment with your own favorite herbs—oregano and Italian seasoning would add even more flavor. We also went cheesy with our version (because why not?), and threw on some Parmesan to kick it up a notch. Be sure to use freshly shredded Parmesan for maximum meltiness 😎.

What should I serve with garlic bread?

What do I do with leftovers?

If you have any leftovers, store the bread in a plastic bag and transfer to the freezer. The bread should keep for about 3 months and any time you want a slice (or four), place them in a 375° oven until thawed and crispy.

Say hello to the best grilled cheese ever: garlic bread grilled cheese! Roasted garlic butter, sourdough bread and melty fontina cheese come together to make the ultimate crunchy, crispy grilled cheese sandwich.

Um hi. Yes, we’re going there!

Garlic bread grilled cheese. It’s a thing. At least, let’s make it a thing. One that we can never forget!

I’m just not sure I can eat grilled cheese any other way now.

This is truly the most indulgent grilled cheese – it’s perfect for garlic lovers but also just anyone that adores fun flavor. My first test of these happened when we had a house full and I cut them into tiny strips. They disappeared almost instantly! A buttery, melt-in-your-mouth sandwich that cannot be ignored. I am telling you it is the best thing to make this week.

Also, if you need soup, it goes fabulously with my favorite tomato soup recipe. They are the best combo ever.

Here’s how I do it!

I make the garlic butter first. I love to use roasted garlic cloves for this or even better – my garlic confit. The recipe for the confit is in Everyday Dinners and it is divine!

The roasted garlic cloves get mixed into softened butter with parmesan, some salt and fresh herbs. Oh my word. It’s so delicious. In the summer, I make this butter mixture all the time for garlic bread on the grill. I use the leftovers for pan-roasting vegetables or even grilled chicken. It’s versatile!

Today, like a complete lunatic, I’m spreading it on sourdough bread for the perfectly garlicky grilled cheese. It will CHANGE THE GAME when it comes to grilled cheese.

For the cheese itself, I love to use freshly grated fontina cheese. It’s the meltiest cheese and just so fantastic. But of course, any cheese works! Use your favorite cheese because just about anything goes with garlic bread. This is a fact.

The garlic-buttered bread slices get stuffed with the grated fontina cheese and hang out in a skillet for a bit until super toasty, golden, crunchy, buttery and melt-in-your-mouth delish.

No one can pass this up!

This recipe is ideal for soup shooters and grilled cheese sticks too, since it’s so decadent. It would be a great appetizer or party food for that reason alone.

If this puts you in the mood for other grilled cheese sandwiches, a few of my favorites are my french onion grilled cheese, this grilled street corn grilled cheese AND this white pizza grilled cheese, which also happens to use roasted garlic.

Need I say more?

This may be my favorite comfort food of all time.

Perfect proportions of real butter and fresh garlic combine to make this recipe the Best Garlic Bread ever! It’s soft and gooey in the middle and crispy and crunchy all around the edges.

I know, I know. I hate it when folks call their recipes “the best,” too. But, y’all! This seriously is the best. I mean, it starts with a stick and a half of butter, for goodness’ sake! How can that be wrong?

Honestly, the only challenge in making this recipe is finding the right bread. Now, I’m sure there are plenty of different breads that will work, but for the proportions to be accurate, you need to find bread that’s close to what I describe here.

It’s a pretty generic loaf of bread. It’s often called French bread, but it’s not baguette. I’ve seen it labeled Italian bread, but it’s not super Italian. It’s long, wide, and fluffy with a thin and crusty exterior. Am I being vague enough?

In the test kitchen, we use what I call the “Walmart rule.” Simply put, it means that if you can’t find an ingredient at Walmart, we usually won’t use it in a recipe. Does that limit us some? Sure it does, but there’s an important reason it exists.

I want all the recipes found on Southern Bite to be approachable, easy, and accessible. I want the ingredients in our recipes to be affordable, straightforward, and easy to find. And the reality is that 90% of Americans are within 15 miles of a Walmart. So, chances are, if they sell it in Walmart, 90 percent of my readers have access to it.

Now, this rule has its limitations. White Lily flour, though found everywhere down in this part of the country, is pretty hard to get up north. But, it’s been a pretty reliable standard up until this point.

So, why all of this babble about Walmart? Well, because Walmart sells this bread in the bakery section and labels it French bread. Is that a totally accurate label? Probably not. But if you want to use what I use in this recipe, run to Walmart and buy that 14-ounce loaf of French bread in the clear cellophane bag. And even if you don’t get this at Walmart, the link above will at least show you what the bread I use looks like.

When it comes to the garlic in this recipe, make sure to use fresh garlic. Don’t opt for the jarred, frozen, or stuff in a tube. Yeah, it will all work, but the flavor just won’t be the same.

And while I’m a huge fan of a garlic press, for this bread, I like to use a knife to finely mince the garlic. There’s something about those little toasty chunks of garlic that just makes this taste so much better.

  • (14 to 16-ounce) loaf soft French bread (not baguette)
  • dried parsley flakes
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  • Slice loaf of bread in half and place the pieces, cut side up, on the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. For extra crispiness, place under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes, watching very carefully. Slice and serve warm.

This Homemade Cheesy Garlic Bread recipe is packed with flavor, and it’s so easy to make. Packed with herby flavors and three types of cheese, it’s the perfect side dish for just about any meal!

  • Cheese: a combination of Parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese works perfectly for this recipe, but you can use almost any kind!
  • Bread: I love to use French bread that has a crunchy crust with soft bread in the middle. Ciabatta or sourdough would also work great!

You can make the homemade garlic butter ahead of time. It will last for up to a week in the fridge or for up to 6 months in the freezer. Keep it on hand so you can whip up fresh cheesy garlic bread quickly and easily anytime you wish!

How do I store garlic bread?

Store cheesy garlic bread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Allow it to cool to room temperature before putting it in the fridge.I recommend reheating in the oven or the air fryer for a crisp texture.

Can I freeze garlic bread?

Yes! Have cheesy garlic bread on hand by making it up, cooking it, and letting the slices completely cool. Place on a tray lined with parchment paper and put it in the freezer for 30 minutes. Once frozen, you can put the bread slices in a freezer-safe container or in a Ziploc bag with parchment paper between each slice so it doesn’t stick. Store in the freezer for up to 6 months! You can also freeze garlic bread before baking — simply prep completely, wrap in plastic wrap and freeze. If you bake from frozen, you may need to add 10-15 minutes.

Tips and Notes

  • Real butter. Use real butter for this recipe, not margarine. It just has a better flavor!
  • Room temperature. Softer butter will incorporate more easily with the other ingredients and have a smoother texture.
  • Use fresh ingredients. I recommend using fresh parsley and fresh garlic for the best flavor.

Cheesy Garlic Bread Variations

  • Mix up the herbs. Feel free to play around with herbs and spices. Try adding other fresh herbs such as rosemary, basil, oregano, or thyme. Use garlic powder as well as fresh garlic for a stronger flavor.
  • Spice it up. Add ground black pepper, some red pepper flakes, or chili powder to the tops of your cheesy garlic bread slices for a bit of heat.

There’s just something about a loaf of fresh garlic bread. As it bakes in the oven, the aroma fills your house with the smell of roasted garlic, making everyone run to the kitchen for the first bite!

The buttery, cheesy, garlicky perfection has been a staple for many households for decades, but more often than not people settle for store-bought frozen bread. Settle no more! Learn how to make the BEST garlic bread recipe to savor around the dinner table for years to come.

This garlic bread recipe is different than most. Almost every other recipe will have you slicing a loaf of bread in half lengthwise, then smothering it with garlic butter. While this works, I like to double up on the buttery, garlic goodness! So what I’ve done here is sliced each piece of bread before it bakes, then slathered both sides with garlic parmesan butter.

This means that every slice of garlic bread, has buttery garlic herb deliciousness on both sides of the bread for maximum flavor!

Table of contents

  • French bread – these loaves are ideal for big fluffy pieces. A baguette can also be used for a more crisp texture, but the slices will be smaller.
  • Unsalted butter – using this allows you to control the saltiness of the garlic butter mixture. Choose a high quality butter for the best results. If you only have salted butter, I recommend omitting the added sea salt.
  • Garlic cloves – fresh crushed garlic cloves are preferred for the best flavor. But if needed, minced garlic from a jar or garlic powder can be used instead.
  • Parmesan cheese – freshly grated cheese is preferred for the best taste. It also melts perfectly in the bread as it bakes. However, pre-grated cheese will also work just fine in this recipe.
  • Flat-leaf parsley – also known as Italian parsley, this fresh herb adds color and flavor to the garlic bread. In a pinch, you can also use dried parsley. Avoid using curly parsley, as it has a different flavor and texture.
  • Italian seasoning – click the link for my easy homemade seasoning mix, or purchase pre-made Italian seasoning at the grocery store in the spice aisle.
  • Sea salt – or kosher salt.

Instructions

Step 1: combine melted butter, crushed garlic, fresh chopped parsley, parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and salt in a medium bowl.

Step 2: cut deep slits in a loaf of french bread, approximately 1 inch apart. Make sure you don’t cut all the way through the bread.

Step 3: use a spatula to spread the garlic parmesan butter in between the slices of bread on each side and all the way to the bottom.

Step 4: wrap the bread in foil, place on a baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 15 minutes. Remove the bread from the oven and unwrap the foil from on top of the bread, then place it back in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and slice each piece of bread the rest of the way through, then serve.

How to store and reheat

  • For storage: wrap up leftover garlic bread in foil, or store it in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can also freeze garlic bread! Seal the whole loaf, or slices of garlic bread, in a freezer-safe airtight container or zip top bag and keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • To reheat: wrap the entire loaf, or a section of the loaf, in foil and reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5-10 minutes. To reheat individual slices of garlic bread, place them on a baking sheet and into a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes. Or heat slices of garlic bread in an air fryer or toaster oven.

Expert tips

  • Slice the bread with a bread knife or serrated knife in a sawing motion. It will cut through the bread without squishing or tearing it.
  • Make it spicy! Sprinkle some red pepper flakes into the garlic butter mixture to spice up the garlic bread.
  • Try adding extra fresh herbs, such as oregano, basil or thyme.
  • For softer garlic bread, skip the last step of uncovering the bread for the last 5 minutes of cooking time.
  • For crispier bread, cook the bread wrapped in foil for 10 minutes, remove the foil on top of the bread and cook for 10 minutes uncovered in the oven.
  • To make the garlic bread in an air fryer, preheat the air fryer to 375°F. For soft bread, wrap the loaf in foil and cook for 15 minutes. If you like it crispy, unwrap the foil on top after 8 minutes of air frying, then continue cooking for 5 more minutes or until the top turns golden brown. If your loaf is too big you can split it in two and wrap each half in foil.
  • To make cheesy garlic bread, add a slice of mozzarella cheese between each slice of bread.

What to serve with it

This homemade garlic bread recipe is delicious served with dozens of dishes, but is especially perfect when paired with pasta or Italian flavors. Try it with any of these recipes.

Baking Garlic Bread in Foil

For softer garlic bread, bake the loaves in foil until the butter has melted. Wrap the two loaves of bread in foil and bake according to the recipe instructions.

The Parmigiano Reggiano or Parmesan cheese in this recipe is for flavoring the garlic bread and not to make it cheesy. To make some cheesy garlic bread with gooey, melty cheese strings, add some good melting cheese before baking.

And that’s about it. Enjoy your homemade garlic bread and let me know how you liked it and what you paired it with in the comments below!

Freeze it for later

That’s right, this homemade garlic bread is freezer-friendly! It’s such a great way to have a delicious side on hand at any time. Here’s how to freeze it:

  • After slathering the bread in the garlic butter mixture, place the bread halves in a single layer in a freezer-friendly bag and store them in the freezer.
  • Freeze the garlic bread for up to 3 months.
  • When ready to eat, add the frozen garlic bread halves to your baking sheet and bake as directed — you may just need to add 3-5 more minutes.

How Long To Soften Butter?

Soften the butter so it mixes well and spreads just as easily. It can take anywhere between 30 to 45 minutes for chilled butter to soften to room temperature. If you don’t have a lot of time or forgot to plan ahead, these tricks will help you soften butter quickly. Spread a thick layer of garlic butter on the bread so it melts and permeates into the bread layers rather than just sitting on top.

Get a little cheesy

If you like cheesy garlic bread, feel free to add 1/4 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese or 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella! You’ll sprinkle it on in the last 2 minutes of baking (so that it doesn’t get too crispy on top).

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 425° and line a large baking sheet with foil. Make garlic compound butter: In a small bowl, mix softened butter with garlic, salt, and parsley until well combined.
  • Spread cut sides of bread liberally with garlic butter. Sprinkle with Parmesan.

Garlic Bread Grilled Cheese

  • whole heads of garlic
  • olive oil for drizzling
  • grated parmesan cheese
  • chopped fresh herbs, like parsley, basil, rosemary
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • To roast the garlic, slice off the top portion of the garlic head to reveal the cloves. Lightly rub back and forth to remove the paper on the sides and peel any excess paper off. Pour a bit of olive oil over each bulb. Wrap the bulbs tightly in foil and place in the oven. Roast for 45 to 60 minutes, until the cloves are caramely and golden. Let cool slightly.
  • Once the garlic is cool enough to touch, squeeze the cloves out onto a plate. Add the softened butter, parmesan, fresh herbs and a pinch of salt. Use a fork to mash everything together until combined.
  • Spread the outsides of the bread with the garlic butter. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place 2 slices of the bread butter-side down in the skillet, then top with the cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread, butter-side up.
  • Cook over low to medium-low heat, doing so slowly until the cheese melts. Once the bottom is golden and toasty, flip and cook until the other side is golden too.
  • Remove and sprinkle with parmesan and fresh herbs if you wish. Slice and serve!

Everything you need to make the best garlic bread

This homemade garlic bread recipe requires super simple ingredients, so trust me when I say you’ll back to it time and time again. Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

  • Bread: I like to use Italian bread or a loaf of French bread (instead of a baguette) to get those nice thick slices.
  • Butter: gotta have plenty of softened butter, which will melt into all of the bread nooks & crannies. Feel free to use salted or unsalted butter. I use 1/2 cup of butter, but you can also get away with using 1/3 cup!
  • Garlic: fresh garlic cloves (rather than garlic powder) are KEY for that true garlic flavor. The minced garlic gets roasted to perfection in the oven.
  • Herbs & spices: instead of Italian seasoning we’re adding a little fresh parsley and sea salt to bring it all together. Feel free to garnish with extra parsley or chives, too!

What Pairs Well With Garlic Bread?

HOMEMADE GARLIC BREAD RECIPE TIPS

Bread – I used a ciabatta loaf but French bread or a crusty baguette will also work. One of the reasons I like ciabatta is because it’s crispy on the outside but chewy on the inside. It also has big holes in the bread layers which is the perfect kind of texture to absorb all that herbed butter garlic goodness.

Garlic – I minced my garlic but you can also grate it for a more pungent flavor. This garlic peeler works wonders for getting the sticky skin off the garlic. Use it on a cutting board so it has some grip when rolling, and roll with the palm of your hand. The skins should come off easily after. PRO TIP – Fresh garlic always works better than the jarred minced kind as it has a better, more pronounced flavor.

Parsley – I used Italian flat leaf parsley but you can also use parsley flakes in a pinch. Italian seasoning will also work if you don’t have any parsley on hand.

Leftovers – The garlic bread will keep well in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Reheating leftovers in the oven – Wrap the garlic bread in foil so it doesn’t dry out, then bake it at 350°F for 10 minutes in the oven. For crispier garlic bread, remove the foil at the last 2 minutes of baking.

Reheating leftovers in the air fryer – Reheat the garlic bread by air frying at 350°F for 3-4 minutes.

Freezing garlic bread – Spread the garlic butter on the unbaked bread halves then freeze them until the garlic butter hardens up. Once the butter is solid, transfer the bread to a freezer-safe ziploc bag or container (slice if needed to make them fit) and freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to bake, transfer the frozen garlic bread slices to a baking sheet and bake according to recipe time and temp until golden brown. If baking from frozen, add about 5 minutes of cooking time.

Storing tips

Store any leftovers covered at room temp for 1-2 days. Simply reheat it in your oven by wrapping it in foil and warming it for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F.
