Have you ever wanted to bake a cake and all you have is a microwave? Most people settle for a simple little mug cake, but I’ve got a Microwave Cake recipe that will get you a deliciously moist layer cake perfect for a little birthday get together. This post contains affiliate links.
What do you bake a microwave cake in?
You can make this cake using the usual 8 x 8 square baking dish. It’s always my go to for cakes and casseroles in the microwave. If you have 9-inch round silicone cake pans, you could also make this as a round layer cake.
Can you make a microwave cake from a box mix?
Yes! I have done this with both regular 15-16 oz cake mix boxes like Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker as well as with 9 oz boxes of Jiffy Golden Yellow Cake.
If you’re using the Jiffy Golden Yellow Cake mix, you’ll need one box per layer, so a two-layer cake will take 2 boxes. For the 15-16 oz cake mixes, you’ll just need one box for two layers.
Use the ingredients listed on the box for each cake mix. Plus, you’ll need instant pudding mix to keep it nice and moist.
You will need the larger size box of instant pudding, it will be 5-6 oz. I use vanilla for yellow cakes and chocolate for chocolate cakes. When using it for the 9 oz Jiffy Cake mixes, you’ll use 1/2 the package of instant pudding for each box cake. For the 15-16 oz cake mixes, you’ll add the whole box of instant pudding.
I also cut a piece of parchment paper to fit the bottom of the pan.
How do you cook a cake in the microwave?
I make each layer one at a time using the same pan, so they’ll all be the same exact size. I wrap each one in plastic wrap and put it in the fridge while the next one cooks.
When you cook the cake in the microwave, cook for about 6 minutes and then check the top of the cake. It should look dry with no wet batter, and it will be pulling away from the sides of the dish. I find my 1000-watt microwave does best with 7 minutes cooking.
I would recommend starting at 5 or 6 minutes and checking to make sure it’s done. Then, pop it in the microwave for 1-minute increments until it’s done.
How do you decorate a microwave layer cake?
This is totally up to you. You can make your own fresh buttercream frosting in a mixer or just buy store bought canned frosting. Unless it’s a very special occasion, I use store bought frosting.
From my experience with microwave cakes, I think Duncan Hines is the best frosting for them. When we used Pillsbury, it kept trying to slide off the cake, but Duncan Hines stayed put. However, I do like buying the Pillsbury prefilled pastry bags of frosting to decorate the top once the cake is completely frosted.

Instructions
Baked potatoes are so versatile. You can top them with anything. I’m going to show you two ways we love to eat baked potatoes that take no time at all.
I honestly had no idea I could bake a potato in the microwave until I was in college.
To prick or not to prick a baked potato?
I’ve experimented with pricking potatoes with a fork before cooking them and totally skipping this step. I don’t think it’s necessary.
I used to be afraid it would explode if I didn’t prick it, but I’ve skipped the pricking for years and have never had a potato explode on me. I’ve cooked a bazillion of these things, even multiple potatoes at the same time, and they have never exploded.
How do you make a microwave baked potato?
First, scrub your potato.
Next, get a piece of wax paper and wrap the potato up completely. That is my big secret because the wax paper does an amazing job at keeping your potato moist without going soggy.
A lot of microwaves have a “potato” button for making a microwave baked potato. If yours doesn’t, I suggest starting with 5 minutes for one potato, 10 minutes for 2, and about 12-13 minutes fro 3 potatoes.
In my experience, if you’re using large or jumbo-sized potatoes (which is what I usually use for a baked potato as a meal), adding more than 3 potatoes just takes way too much time.
I’ve found if you’re making multiple potatoes, such as 4, it’s better to cook 2 at a time.
When the time is up, use a hot pad to wrap around your potato and gently squish it. If it gives easily, then your potato is ready. If it’s still hard, cook it an additional 2-3 minutes and check again.
If your potato is just slightly squishy, I’ve found wrapping the potato in a kitchen towel (keep the wax paper wrapped around it as well) and just letting it sit on the counter for 5-10 minutes allows it to keep cooking itself internally, and then, it’s perfectly ready, and it can still melt butter.
If your potato is squishy and ready right out of the microwave, you can do this same thing while you get all the other ingredients ready, and it will stay hot enough to melt butter for at least 5 minutes or so.

When I was in college, I would often grab an apple from the dining hall to put in my backpack before heading to class. Then, I’d forget all about it until that night. That’s when I would whip up a Microwave Baked Apple right in my dorm room. It smelled wonderful and tasted amazing with all that cinnamon and buttery goodness.
You’ve probably been guilty of taking an apple from the dining hall or the continental breakfast at the hotel, and then weren’t sure what to do with it. This treat takes next to no time at all to make, and it’s very simple — even if you are a novice at cooking.
A baked apple is a great healthy alternative to apple pie. It has less sugar, and it definitely hits that spot if you’re having a craving for something sweet.
What kind of apples are for baking?
They often say Granny Smith are favorites for baking, but I don’t like them as they are just too tart. My favorite apples for anything are Macintosh. They are like the sweet tarts of apples. They usually debut in the Fall, and you can find them for a few months at the grocery store.
We also love Golden Delicious and Gala apples. My middle teenage loves apples, too, and his favorite are Honeycrisp apples. Do you have a favorite?
I have made baked apples with all kinds of apples. There is not a “wrong apple” to use. So, if all you have is a Red Delicious — don’t worry about it not being a proper baking apple.
What size apple for baking in the microwave?
For this particular recipe, I used a small Honeycrisp apple. Apples come in all sizes. But remember that the larger your apple, the longer the cooking time will be.
If you use a small to medium sized apple, this recipe should be done in about 2 minutes. But, if you end up using a large apple, be prepared to add an extra minute or two to the cooking time. You’ll know your apple is done when you poke the apple with a fork and you can feel the softness.
How to make a Microwave Baked Apple?
To get your apple ready for baking, you’ll want to remove almost all the core — except for the very bottom of the apple. This will be the hardest part. You have to be careful. I have found scoring the apple with a knife and then using a spoon to scoop out the insides was the easiest way I kept the bottom of the core intact.
The reason behind leaving the bottom is because if you core out the entire middle, the sugar butter mixture you pack in the center of the apple just runs right through the apple.
Also, always put your apple in a bowl to microwave it. If you use a saucer, when you remove the apple from the microwave, it can roll around and dump the super hot sugary mixture onto your skin, which will burn. I have personal experience with this, and it’s not fun.

- Core the middle of the apple, but keep the very bottom intact. This works well with a knife and then spoon to dig it out.
- Mix together the cinnamon, sugar, and softened butter and then add it into the center of the apple and over the top if necessary. Shake a bit of cinnamon over the top.
- Microwaves vary so poke your apple with a fork. When it’s soft, it’s done.

When it’s a baked potato night but you’re short on time, a microwave baked potato is such a time saver.

How Long to Microwave a Baked Potato
If you popped in from search looking for this info, here you go:
- Microwave 1 potato* for 3 to 4 minutes per side
- 2 potatoes for 4 to 5 minutes per side
- 3 potatoes for 5 to 6 minutes per side
*Be sure to pierce potatoes with a fork before microwaving.
These times are for average-to-large-size baking potatoes of around 10 ounces. For smaller potatoes, start with one minute less, and for larger, one minute more.
Now that’s covered, if you want a little more information, keep reading.
How to Prep Microwave Baked Potatoes
- Always start by giving your potato a good scrub to remove any debris from its skin.
- Dry the potato and then pierce it all over with a fork. This allows steam to escape as the potato cooks and will prevent it from exploding in your microwave.
How to Bake a Potato in the Microwave
1. Once your potato is scrubbed, dried, and pierced, place it directly into the microwave. If cooking more than one potato at a time, make sure that the potatoes are not touching.
2. Cook the potato for 3 to 4 minutes and then carefully flip and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes. For every extra potato you’re cooking, add 1 minute for each side.
3. Use a knife to pierce the potato and check for doneness. The potato should feel tender (but not mushy) all the way through.
4. If the potato is finished, allow it to sit for 1 minute to cool slightly before removing it from the microwave. If still hard, continue to cook in 1-minute increments until the potato is tender.
Getting Crispy Skin on a Microwave Baked Potato
If you really love a baked potato with crispy skin, you can still get that even if you do most of the cooking in the microwave.
To crisp the skin of a microwave baked potato: Preheat your oven to 425°F and cook the potato(es) in the microwave according to the recipe instructions. Once cooked, rub your potato with olive oil—it will be hot, so handle with care! Sprinkle generously with salt (preferably coarse salt) and place the potato on a baking sheet.
Bake until the skin is crispy, usually 10 to 15 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
Baked Potato Toppings
Once your potatoes are finished, time to load them up. You can use classic baked potato toppings like:
- Butter
- Cheese
- Sour cream
- Bacon
Or go with some non-traditional toppings like:
- Chili
- Broccoli and cheese sauce
- Taco filling and nacho sauce
FAQ
To cut a baked potato like a restaurant, slice the potato lengthwise across the top, cutting about halfway down. Then, using a thick towel to protect your hands from the hot potato, use the thumb and index finger of each hand to squeeze the sides of the potato inward until the slice splits open.
Use a fork to fluff up the insides of the potato before adding your toppings.
Why do potatoes get hard in the microwave?
Potatoes get hard in the microwave when they’re overcooked and the overcooked sections lose too much moisture and become dry and hard.
If you’re using an older microwave without a revolving plate and find that your potato is developing hard spots before it’s cooked all the way through, try rotating it (not just flipping it) a couple times during the cooking process so it cooks evenly all over.
What to serve with baked potatoes?
A loaded baked potato (like a chili baked potato or broccoli and cheese potato) can be a meal all on its own, but baked potatoes are also classic sides for meaty mains. I recommend:

Microwave corn on the cob is the easiest way to cook a whole ear of corn. It’s quick, mess-free, and comes out perfect every time.
I have another microwave vegetable recipe for you today, and honestly, this one’s kind of a game-changer: Microwave Corn on the Cob.
This is the BEST way to cook corn on the cob, because it is SO quick, SO easy, and mess-free.
The Easiest Way to Make Corn on the Cob
Cooking corn in the microwave means no need to shuck the corn or peel off those annoying little stringy bits.
You literally just cut the end off an ear of corn, shove it in the microwave, and once it’s cooked, it slides right out of the husk, silk-free and ready to eat.
It. Is. Magic.
To Make Corn on the Cob in the Microwave, You Will Need
- A very sharp knife
- A microwave
- Corn on the cob
- 3 minutes
How to Cook Corn on the Cob in the Microwave
1. To microwave corn on the cob in the husk, you’ll first cut off one end so you can slide the corn out once it’s cooked. To do this, find the point at the stalk end (the closed end without all the corn silk) where the cob begins to taper into a point.
You’re going to slice off the end just before that (don’t cut the end off after the cob starts to narrow or you won’t be able to slide the corn out of the husk easily).
Use a sharp knife to make a shallow cut all the way around the cob to help guide the knife, and then apply a little force and slice all the way through.
A Note on Cutting Corn: Cutting through the cob takes a bit of muscle and a sharp knife, as cobs are quite tough. If you’re really struggling to cut the corn or the pressure needed is making you nervous, stop, skip this step and finish cutting off the end after microwaving.
The corn will be softer and easier to cut after microwaving. You’ll just need to let it cool long enough for you to safely handle it.
3. Carefully, using an oven mitt or towel if necessary, squeeze the corn out of the husk. Make sure to keep squeezing all the way to the end. This helps keep the silk trapped inside.
4. Rinse to remove any stray strands of silk, brush with melted butter if that’s your thing, and enjoy!
How to Microwave Husked Corn on the Cob
If your corn is already husked, not a problem. You can microwave corn in a paper towel and get the same effect.
- Fold a paper towel in half, run it under water, and then squeeze out most of the liquid so that it is not dripping. Wrap the damp towel around your corn and it’s ready to go.
- If you have a pack of corn that’s half-shucked, with the ends trimmed but some husks still on, just leave the husks on and wrap the paper towel over them. They and the corn silk will be easier to remove after microwaving.
What to Put on Corn on the Cob
If you want to add a flavor boost to your corn, try one of these combos:
- Elote-style: Drizzle corn with melted butter and then spread mayonnaise over the entire thing. Sprinkle with cotija or Parmesan cheese, a bit of chili powder and a squeeze of lime juice.
- Herbed Butter Corn: Whip your favorite herbs into softened butter (try one of these flavor combos if you’re not sure where to start) and spread the flavored butter over the corn.
Yes. You can microwave more than one ear of corn in the microwave. The rule of thumb is you’ll want to add 1 to 2 minutes per ear of corn and not cook more than what will fit in a single layer with a little space between, so 3 to 4 ears is usually the limit.
- Microwave 2 ears of corn: 4-5 minutes
- Microwave 3 ears of corn: 5-6 minutes
- Microwave 4 ears of corn: 6-7 minutes
How do you store cooked corn on the cob?
Store cooked corn in an airtight container or plastic bag in your refrigerator for 2 to 3 days.
How do you reheat cooked corn on the cob?
Corn on the cob can be reheated in the microwave. Wrap the corn in a slightly damp paper towel and microwave in 20-second increments until it is heated through.
What Goes With Corn on the Cob?
If you’ve craving corn on the cob and need some ideas on what to serve it with, these are some of my favorites:

You can bake bread in the microwave! For this you need slightly different ingredients than for baking conventional bread. This recipe is actually similar to the one for a sugar-free cake. You can bake a simple microwave bread in five minutes plus preparation time.
- 5 teaspoons of household flour
- 2-3 teaspoons of oil
- 1 teaspoon of baking powder
- 2-3 teaspoons of milk
- 2 teaspoons of water
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Method
Know that bread made with yeast works best in an oven or bread maker. For this reason, chemical fermentation substances such as baking powder are usually used for microwave breads instead of real yeast. Bread does not form a brown crust in the microwave. In addition, microwave bread rises more when it is baked, which can be a problem for the consistency: the bursting of air bubbles that form when it rises can cause the consistency to be uneven. The recipe you use to bake microwave bread is different from traditional bread.
Mixing the ingredients together
Step 1. Mix the ingredients in a large mixing bowl
First, add five teaspoons of household flour to the bowl. You can also use other types of flour in addition: almond flour, also known as almond bran, buckwheat flour, whole wheat flour, etc. If you want, you can mix these types of flour with the household flour, but remember that each type of flour has its own liquid content and its own baking behavior. The recipe must be adapted with other types of flour.
If possible, use chemically treated “bleached” flour. Bleached flour contains less protein than unbleached flour and is better for making quick breads
Step 2. Mix one teaspoon each of baking powder and vanilla with the flour
The baking powder will “rise” the bread by increasing its volume. Don’t add too much of it or the batter will get out of control! The vanilla is a matter of taste. It does not affect the baking process and can give the bread a pleasantly sweet taste.
Step 3. Add an egg and whisk it well with the mixture
Egg size doesn’t matter, even if a larger egg makes a slightly juicier bread. Make sure you don’t forget any eggshells in the batter.
Step 4. Add 2-3 teaspoons of milk
You can take the milk you like best: cow milk, almond milk, rice milk, coconut milk, hemp milk. A thicker milk results in a somewhat richer bread. The main job of milk, however, is to moisten the dough so that the flour holds together.
Step 5. Add two teaspoons of water
The water should also moisten the dough so that the flour sticks together. If you don’t add water, your bread will be way too dry. Mix the water with the other ingredients in the bowl.
Step 6. Add 2-3 teaspoons of oil
Step 1. Knead the dough
Mix the dough thoroughly with clean hands so that it holds together well. Walk the mass vigorously and try to distribute the moisture evenly. Knead the dough for 2-5 minutes or until you can pull it apart without it falling apart.
Step 2. Shape the dough
Step 3. Place the batter in a microwaveable bowl
Most ceramic or glass dishes shouldn’t be a problem, but under no circumstances should you heat metal in the microwave. Many microwaveable containers are labeled as such. Make sure the bowl is flat and has a level bottom: you need to get the bread out of there after baking.
Try a large ceramic mug. They are microwaveable, the ideal size and the bread is easy to remove without getting burned. They are best suited for single servings
Step 4. Microwave the dough over high heat for 5 minutes
When you take the bread out, it should be ready to eat. If your microwave has a window, check the batter regularly to make sure it isn’t overheating or rising too much. If the dough starts to look dry, flaky, or wrinkled, all of the moisture may have been sacrificed to the heat. Cut and serve your bread.
Step 5. Done
- Test with a knife to see if the bread is all through. If the blade is damp when you pull it out, the bread is not ready and will have to stay in the microwave longer.
- You can also bake a chocolate donut by modifying the recipe slightly. Add two tablespoons of chocolate powder and one teaspoon of sugar and shape the dough into a donut shape. The baking time is the same.
