Making homemade yeast rolls sounds complicated, but in reality, it is much easier than you imagine. Bread machine dinner rolls are surprisingly simple to make and the perfect way to elevate any meal. Give them a try, and I think they will become your go-to comfort food just like they are mine.
Homemade dinner rolls have long been a staple of special occasions.
While the process of making traditional homemade dinner rolls can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, you don’t need to let that stop you from enjoying freshly-baked bread at your next gathering.
Instead, try using a bread machine to make the dough!
Bread machines make the process much easier by automating much of the kneading and first rising part. (This recipe is so easy that my 18-year-old son makes it at least once a week.)
Bread machine hamburger buns are a great choice if you’re looking for a quick homemade bun for burgers or hot dogs. The machine makes mixing and kneading a breeze, and the results are more delicious than store-bought buns.
The recipe makes about eight large hamburger buns, or you can make smaller buns for sliders. Brush the buns with a simple egg wash just before they go into the oven and sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds for a finishing touch. The egg wash will help produce a nicely browned top, make the crust a bit firmer, add shine, and give the seeds something to stick to.

- Gather the ingredients.
- When the dough cycle finishes, turn the dough out onto a floured board and punch it down. Knead 4 or 5 times; add a little more flour as you knead if necessary to keep the dough from sticking to your hands or the board.
- Lightly grease a large baking sheet; sprinkle with cornmeal. Alternatively, line the baking sheet with parchment paper and sprinkle with cornmeal.
- Pat the dough into a circle and cut into 8 even wedges. Form each wedge into a ball, then flatten each one into a smooth and fairly even circle, slightly bigger than a burger.
- Preheat the oven to 375 F.
- Brush the buns lightly with the egg wash (egg and water mixture). If desired, sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds.
- Let cool before serving.
Tips
- For a soft crust, shine, and a bit of extra golden color, make the egg wash with an egg yolk plus 1 tablespoon of milk or cream, or use a whole egg with 1 tablespoon of water.
- For hot dog buns, form each wedge into long, narrow shapes; to make smaller buns for sliders or party sandwiches, cut each wedge in half and shape into small balls.

Recipe Tips for Homemade Bread Machine Dinner Buns
Here are some tips to help you make the best buns!
- Make sure your milk and butter are at room temperature. Cold ingredients do not stimulate yeast growth, so your dough won’t rise properly.
- To make these buns like tray buns, use an 8 x 8 baking pan.
- If you want fresh buns ready for dinner (say 5:30), start this process around 2:30 in the afternoon.
- When the buns are done baking, immediately brush them with butter. This will give them nice buttery, shiny tops.
- Prep Time:
- Rising Time: 2 hours, 45 minutes
- Cook Time:
- Total Time: 3 hours 20 minutes
- Yield: buns
- Method:
- 1 1/3 cup milk (at room temperature)
- 1 1/4 tsp salt
- sugar
- butter (at room temperature)
- 3 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 1/4 tsp bread machine or instant yeast
Prevent your screen from going dark
- Measure all of the ingredients above, in the order they are listed, into your bread machine.
- Choose the Dough Cycle.
- Once the dough cycle has completed, remove the dough to a lightly floured surface and cover with a clean tea towel. Let rise for 15 minutes.
- After this time, divide the dough into 12 portions.
- Now it’s time to shape the dough into buns.
- Make sure your hands are lightly floured.
- Shape each portion of dough into a ball.
- You want the tops of the buns to be taut, so while keeping the dough in a ball shape, you need to tuck the dough at the bottom of each bun, underneath as you roll. You’ll get the hang of it as you roll them!
- Grease an 8 x 8 baking pan with oil.
- Then place the buns into the baking pan, in 3 rows of 4, spacing them out evenly.
- Cover with a clean tea towel and let rest and rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- When the buns are done rising, bake for 25 minutes. When the bread is done, it will sound hollow when you tap on it.
- As soon as you take the buns out of the oven, brush the tops with butter.

🔍 FAQs
Can I substitute something else for all-purpose flour?
You can use a different type of flour, but you may need to adjust the amount of water accordingly. Bread flour typically has more gluten than all-purpose flour, so you may need less water if you use all-purpose flour.
Can I make these homemade hamburger buns ahead of time?
Yes, you can make these buns ahead of time.
How do I know if the dough is well-kneaded?
A well-kneaded dough should be smooth and bounces back quickly when poked with your finger.
Types of Bread Makers
When bread machines were first sold, they produced bread loaves that were tall and rectangular in shape. The bread pans were square or slightly rectangular, but the finished loaves tended to be overly tall and vertical-shaped compared to standard bread, resulting in a loaf that was an unusual shape. These vertical bread machines are still popular today. They tend to have a smaller footprint, so they take less space on the counter and are easier to store. They are also less expensive and make smaller loaves of bread, so they’re a good option for small households or anyone who doesn’t eat that much bread.
The downside to the vertical loaves is that the shape can be odd for making sandwiches, and you might need to cut the slices to make them fit neatly into your toaster. Also, because the heating element is located on the bottom of these machines, very tall loaves can bake unevenly with darker browning on the bottom and a very pale top crust.
The Spruce Eats / Vicky Wasik
Horizontal Bread Machines
If tall loaves are too awkwardly shaped for you, look for a bread machine that produces horizontal, rectangular-shaped loaves that look more like bread that was baked in a standard loaf pan. These machines have a longer bread pan and larger baking chamber and tend to be able to bake larger loaves of bread than vertical bread machines. However, the increased baking capacity means this style of break maker tends to be larger overall and will take up more space in your kitchen.
Since there’s more room for the dough to move around in a horizontal, rectangular bread pan, machines equipped with just a single paddle may be less efficient at kneading the dough. Sometimes the dough can get stuck on one end of the pan while the paddle spins on its own, which can result in the loaves turning out unevenly shaped with more dough on one end or a tall middle with shorter ends. Higher-end machines might have two paddles for kneading so the dough is kneaded more efficiently and the shape of the finished loaf is more even.
Machines that bake horizontal loaves tend to be more expensive than those that bake vertical loaves, but you can find affordable horizontal bread machines.
🥫 Storage instructions
Burger buns can be stored at room temperature in a bread bag or an airtight container for up to 2 days. Alternatively, they can be frozen for up to 2-3 months.
How long do you proof rolls in the oven?
Place the shaped rolls to proof in the warm oven to rise for about an hour and a half. Cover the dough balls with another tray so that they do not dry while proving.
📖 here’s the recipe
- all purpose flour
- softened at room temperature
For Topping
- Add all ingredients to the bucket of a bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select the DOUGH cycle and press start. Keep an eye on the dough for the first few minutes of mixing. Add more water if it is dry and crumbly, and more flour if it is too sticky. The dough should be smooth and slightly sticky to the touch but should completely clear the sides and bottom of the bread machine bucket. Allow the cycle to finish.
- Remove the dough when the machine beeps and cut into eighths with a sharp knife. (It is easiest to divide into half, then quarters, etc.). Gently shape into rolls by pulling down the bottoms of the dough to smooth out the tops.
- Bake for 14-17 minutes until deep golden brown. Rolls will appear very browned due to the egg wash. Remove and cool on a wire rack. Allow to fully cool before slicing and serving with burgers. For best results, toast with butter on a hot skillet turrned to low. Eat within a day, or freeze for longer storage.
Don’t limit yourself to burgers; these buns are great for pulled pork, chicken sandwiches, and more.
Try topping with poppy seeds or everything bagel seasoning.
I recommend SAF instant yeast for bread machine baking, and this basic bread machine, perfect for kneading.

Ingredients
It is absolutely easy to make soft hamburger buns with no egg in the bread machine. You will need basic pantry ingredients like bread flour or all-purpose flour, instant yeast, sugar, salt, oil, and water.
Instant yeast or bread machine yeast works great for making bread or dough in the bread machine. Check out my blog post on which yeast to use in a bread machine.
As these are eggless, there is no need for an egg wash but a coating of milk or plant-based milk works wonders and then you can sprinkle sesame seeds or bagel seasoning.
Other Options We Tested
- Oster ExpressBake 2-Pound Bread Maker: This affordable bread machine was previously on our list as a best budget pick. Besides the price, it has a lot going for it, including an easy-to-use interface, multiple settings, and a modern design. But in our latest round of Lab testing, it produced sunken, dense bread that was browned on the outside but gummy and undercooked within. It didn’t fully mix the banana bread batter, leaving floury clumps in the unevely baked loaf.
- Cuisinart 2-Pound Convection Bread Maker: A 16-item menu and convection cooking originally made this Cuisinart bread machine a great pick for multi-size loaves. Our Lab testers found it to be a rather finicky machine. The loaves of bread rose nicely, except that they consistently stuck to the paddle, warranting a need to cut the paddle out of the bread loaf and making it hard to clean. Inside, the gluten either didn’t form properly, creating a gummy texture or in the gluten-free loaf, the texture came out gritty and chewy.
- Zojirushi Home Bakery Maestro Breadmaker: Zojirushi might be most famous for rice cookers, but all three of its bread machines we tested made fantastic loaves. The Maestro is just more limited in functionality and smaller in capacity than our top pick, the Zojirushi Virtuoso, and more expensive than our favorite for mini-loaves, the Zojirushi Mini.
- Amazon Basics 2-Pound Non-Stick Bread Making Machine: They did at least get the “non-stick” part right, as it was indeed easy to remove the loaves from the pan with this machine. It emitted burning plastic-smelling smoke as it baked, though, and the white bread came out with a completely sunken, concave top. It’s certainly cheap, and you get what you pay for.
Homemade burger buns can be stored at room temperature for 3-4 days. You can also freeze them for about a month in freezer-safe containers or ziplock bags. When you are ready to eat, you can reheat them in the oven for about 5 minutes at 350°F.

Wet ingredients
- , or all-purpose flour
- Organic cane sugar
- Bread Machine yeast or instant yeast
For brushing and topping
- Add the ingredients (water, oil, sugar, salt, bread flour, and yeast) in the order recommended by the bread machine manufacturer and start the “Dough” cycle.
- Once the dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the container and knead it on a lightly floured surface for a few seconds to get a soft and smooth dough ball.
Shaping the dough
- Divide the dough into 6 equal parts.
- Make a smooth ball from each piece and press lightly between your palms and place it on the tray. Place them at least 2-inch apart, if the gap is less, they will rise like dinner rolls.
Final rise
- Cover the tray with another tray and keep it in a warm place. Optionally, place it in the oven and turn the oven on the “warm” setting for 5 minutes and then let them rest for 90 minutes for the second rise.
- After the balls have risen well, apply some milk with a basting brush, this gives the burgers a nice shine once they are baked. Optionally sprinkle some sesame seeds.
Baking in oven
- You can also add poppy seeds on the burgers along with sesame seeds.
- Once the burger buns are ready, they may seem to be hard however they will soften as they cool down.
- Home made bread can be stored in an airtight container for 3-4 days.
- It is best to weigh the flour using a food scale for best and consistent results.
- Check out this post for detailed instructions on how to knead dough in stand mixer and proof it in the instant pot.

* Percent Daily Values are based on a 2000 calorie diet.
- Milk: I recommend using whole milk to make bread maker dinner rolls as the fat in the milk helps the texture of the rolls.
- Egg: Use a large egg. Make sure you beat it before adding it to your bread machine.
- Honey: I like to use honey as a sweetener in these dinner rolls. It adds a nice touch of sweetness without overpowering the other flavors in the rolls.
- Shortening and butter: Shortening helps with the texture, while butter helps with the flavor. If you don’t have shortening, you can use all butter.
- Salt: Don’t omit the salt. Without it your bread will be too dense – not to mention tasteless!
- Flour: For the best results, use bread flour. It has a higher protein content which is important of the structure of the rolls.
- Yeast: I like to use instant yeast (also called bread machine yeast) in these dinner rolls. If you don’t have instant yeast, you can simply replace it with regular active dry yeast – just use 25% more.
- Garlic: We like to brush our rolls with garlic butter, but this is optional.
- Salt: Finishing with a sprinkle of flaky salt (such as Maldon sea salt) adds a nice pop of flavor.
How to make dough for rolls in a bread machine?
I have made these dinner rolls in the Hamilton Beach bread machine. However, all of the bread machines have the “Dough” cycle. The best part is that you only need to put all the ingredients (water, oil, sugar, salt, bread flour, and instant yeast) in the container and start the “Dough” cycle which will mix, knead and get the dough through its first rise.
Frequently Asked Questions
I recommend using bread flour when making dinner rolls, because it has a higher protein content than all-purpose flour. This can help to create a light and fluffy texture in your rolls, as well as a nice crusty exterior.
How do you shape dinner rolls?
Once the dough is ready, place it on a lightly floured surface so it is easy to work and does not feel sticky while shaping. Divide the dough into pieces using a dough pastry scraper cutter or a pizza cutter and roll them into dough balls.
An easy way to roll the balls to get a smooth surface is to tuck all ends of the dough piece on one side to make the other side smooth. For making even size rolls, you can even weigh every dough piece (about 37-38 grams) and then roll it into a ball.
What to Look for When Buying a Bread Machine
Most bread makers produce loaves that weigh 1 to 2 pounds, but some models are capable of baking 2.5-pound family-sized loaves. In theory, you can add more or less flour and water to any bread machine to make a larger or smaller loaf, but if you try to bake a 2-pound loaf in a machine designed for 1-pound loaves, it might be pale, underdone, or rise too far out of the pan. And baking a small batch loaf in a machine designed for larger loaves might result in a very short loaf with a dry texture and crust that is too dark and thick.
The Spruce Eats / Lindsay Boyers
Keep in mind that larger, denser loaves of bread require more power to bake. Most bread machines have somewhere between 500 to 1000 watts of power. If you plan to bake heavy breads and cakes, or loaves with lots of add-ins like nuts, seeds, or dried fruit, you’ll want to look for a bread machine on the higher end of that wattage range to ensure it can bake fully and evenly.
The overall size and weight of the machine matter, too. Larger-capacity, higher-power ones generally take up more counter space and are heavier, though clever design configurations can save space. Smaller machines are easier to store out of sight when not in use—some even have a portable carrying handle—but they may have fewer settings and not be able to make large loaves of bread.
Budget bread makers will include at least one kneading paddle, but higher-end machines usually come with two. Multiple paddles are preferable for the best kneading results. Some machines have you remove the paddles before baking, which prevents those bread-machine holes but is an extra manual step in what’s supposed to be a fully automated process.
Settings and Programs
Today’s bread machines come with at least several different programs for different types of bread. Extra settings are handy for people who want to experiment with different types of grains and bread styles, but a simple bread maker will suffice if your goal is to make basic sandwich bread to replace store-bought bread.
Most bread machines include the option to knead dough without baking it, so you can bake your bread machine dough in a standard oven if you prefer. There’s also the option to bake without mixing or kneading if you want to bake cake or muffins in a bread machine. You might come across bread machines with options for making jam or yogurt, but these settings are only useful if you’ll actually use them.
Other potential features include rapid modes that speed up the process if you’re in a hurry; a keep-warm mode that holds freshly baked bread; a mix-in hopper that automatically adds nuts or fruit in the middle of the process; and a knead-only mode for pasta or pizza dough. Many machines have crust color options that further adjust baking for light, medium, or dark bread, while others let you create your own custom programs.
More full-featured bread machines are generally more expensive, but that might not be necessary if you won’t be making any of the more esoteric recipes they’re designed for.
An often overlooked feature of most bread machines is that you can load them up with ingredients and then set them to start the bread-making process 12 or more hours in advance. All the cycles of kneading and rising can take several hours, and a timer lets your plan ahead to be sure your bread is hot and fresh exactly when you need it. You can fill the machine in the morning and set it to have bread ready for dinner, or at night so there’s the smell of fresh bread to wake you up in the morning.
On average, you can expect to spend somewhere in the range of $100 to $150 for a decent bread machine from a mid-range brand. Some bread makers from budget brands may be priced less than $100, while other high-end brands such as Breville and Zojirushi can cost $300 or more.
The typical warranty for bread machines is one year, usually covering manufacturing defects rather than wear-and-tear or misuse. Specific coverage can vary depending on the manufacturer and model, so it’s always a good idea to check the details before your purchase. Additional warranties are available upon purchase from vendors like Amazon.
Good to Know
Even if you want to play with different shaped loaves or dinner rolls, you can use a bread machine to knead and rise the dough, then remove to shape by hand and bake in the oven.

How to make fluffy dinner rolls?
The key to making light and fluffy dinner rolls is to make perfect dough. It is also highly recommended to weigh the flour using a food scale instead of measuring it by a cup to ensure consistency.
Sifting the flour also helps make the flour aerated which helps to make light dinner rolls. However, it is optional. You can also refer to my blog where I have elaborated on the process of making bread dough in a bread machine.
Tools Needed to Make
As an amazon associate, I earn from qualifying sales.
- Bread Machine
- Pastry Mat
- Parchment Paper
- 2 ¾ quart baking dish
- Silicone Brush
The first step is to make the dough using the bread machine and the key to soft bread is by aerating the flour (by sifting) and also weighing it (using a food scale) instead of measuring by cups.
The “Dough” cycle in a bread machine does all the job of mixing, kneading, and dough’s first rise. While the machine does all the tasks, you have all the time to prepare the burger patties.
Once the dough cycle is complete and the dough has been through its first rise, remove the dough from the bread machine container.
Once the dough cycle is complete, take the dough out of the bread machine pan and knead it on a lightly floured surface for a few seconds to make a smooth dough ball.
Divide the dough into 6 or 8 pieces and make round balls by rolling it between your palms. Tuck all the sides to the bottom to get a smooth surface on the top of the dough ball.
Lightly press the balls between your palms and place the balls in a baking tray, at least 2 inches apart else they will stick to each other while rising and end up like dinner rolls.
Tip: Add a little bit of flour if the dough is a little sticky while kneading.
For the second or final rise, cover and place the tray in a warm place until they double in volume. Optionally, place it in the oven and turn the oven on the “warm” setting for 5 minutes and then let them rest for 90 minutes for the second rise.
Once the dough balls are through the second rise, remove the burger buns from the oven and preheat the oven to 350°F.
While the oven is preheating, apply some milk (plant-based for vegan) on the hamburger buns using a basting brush. This gives a nice glaze to the burger buns and also helps to hold onto any toppings like bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, or poppy seeds.
Once the oven is preheated to 350°F, place the risen hamburger buns and bake them at 350°F for about 16-18 minutes. Once the burger buns are golden brown the burger buns are ready.
This recipe yields 6 large buns or 8 medium size burger buns.
I have made this hamburger buns dough in the 2 lb. Hamilton Beach Artisan bread maker using the dough cycle. This recipe should work well for any bread machine.
You will also need a baking sheet to bake the burger buns, using parchment paper is optional.
Once you remove the buns from the oven, allow them to cool down completely on a wire rack, and then slice it with a serrated bread knife.
Store leftover Bread machine yeast rolls at room temperature for up to three days. I don’t recommend refrigerating leftover bread because the refrigerator dries bread out.
For longer storage, freeze the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and then transfer them to a freezer bag. Freeze for up to three months.
Thaw at room temperature and then reheat in the oven.
🍴Instructions
this Oster bread machine is affordable and perfect if you mostly use your machine for making dough.
My friends, this recipe is easy! The bread machine does all the hard work.
We begin by adding all the dough ingredients to the bread machine and starting the dough cycle. I never, ever worry about the order the ingredients go in, but if your manufacturer recommends a specific order you might want to use that.
Before you walk away, check the consistency of the dough. You want the dough to be smooth and elastic, not sticking to the bread machine bucket. If it’s too dry and crumbly, add a bit more water. If it’s too wet and sticky, a bit more flour.
When the machine beeps, you’ll have lovely, risen dough. All that’s left to do is shape, rise again, and bake!
Shaping and baking the buns
Once the dough is ready, divide it up into eight equal sized pieces. You can use a scale if you want to be sure they’re the same, or you just divide it in half and keep going. Of course, if you want smaller buns you could make 12 or even 16.
To shape them, pinch the bottoms so that the top becomes round and smooth. Don’t try to squish them down from the top. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and very gently flatten them out, just a little.
For a pretty shine and professional look, brush the burger buns with an egg wash and then sprinkle with sesame seeds or poppy seeds. You can also do this after the second rise, but I like to do it first to avoid deflating them later.
Cover the baking tray with plastic wrap that’s been generously sprayed with cooking spray. You don’t want the buns rising to the plastic wrap and getting stuck!
Tuck them into a warm place, like a slightly warmed but turned-off oven, and let them rise until they are very puffy. Towards the end of the rising, preheat your oven (but make sure the rolls aren’t still in there!) to 375 degrees.
When the oven is bake, bake for about 15 minutes until the rolls are baked through, with deep golden brown exteriors.
Yes, you should grease the pan of your bread maker before putting in your ingredients. Greasing will help you easily remove the baked loaf of bread from the pan. You can use your favorite cooking oil or butter to grease the pan.
What is bread machine yeast?
Similar to rapid-rise or instant yeast, bread machine yeast is formulated to work best in bread machines. Compared with standard active dry yeast, bread machine yeast has finer granules and doesn’t need to be activated in warm water before being added to the machine. (You can still use active dry yeast in bread machines, but you’ll need to dissolve it in water and let it get frothy first.) Using bread machine yeast requires about half the time for the bread to rise as opposed to active yeast—though the texture or flavor between the final products may be slightly different.
Can a bread machine make gluten-free bread?
Of course, results will vary depending on your recipe, so it’s best to consult gluten-free recipes adapted for a bread machine. If you plan to make gluten-free bread in a machine that has previously been used for gluten-containing bread, you’ll need to clean every nook and cranny thoroughly to remove any leftover flour residue that could cross-contaminate your gluten-free loaves.
How long does homemade bread last?
Homemade bread will last on average two to four days at room temperature (store-bought bread, by contrast, lasts up to seven days). Storing bread in the refrigerator isn’t recommended since the cold dries the bread and turns it stale faster—though it could increase the shelf-life of your bread by up to five days.
How do you freeze homemade bread?
If you bake a bunch of bread at once, it’s easy to freeze some loaves to have later. Homemade bread loaves can be frozen for up to three months.
Let the fresh-baked bread cool completely before wrapping it for freezer storage. Wrap the loaves in plastic wrap and then place them into an airtight freezer bag. Be sure to mark the bag with the contents and the date you freeze it.
You can also freeze the bread in plastic wrap or a freezer bag, then transfer it to a vacuum sealer bag for even more protection from the air. Freezing before sealing will help prevent the vacuum sealer from crushing the bread.
“Another secret to giving your bread the professional bakery look is to use a cornstarch glaze,” says Linda Stradley, Oregon-based food author and head of the recipe website What’s Cooking America. She makes her cornstarch glaze by mixing a teaspoon of cornstarch into half a cup of cold water and keeps the mixture in the fridge to brush over the bread she makes.
How do you clean a bread machine?
Bread machines should be cleaned after each use to keep them sanitary and looking new. After use, unplug the bread machine and let it cool completely before cleaning.
The bread pan and mixing paddles can be removed and washed by hand or in the dishwasher. Check your manual for what’s recommended.
The actual bread machine can not be submerged in water since it contains electrical components. If you notice any flour, dough, or crumbs in the bread machine chamber, you’ll need to unplug the unit and wipe the residue away with a cloth, similarly to how you’d clean a toaster. Any bits of leftover dough should be left to dry out so they can be easily brushed away.
What are vegan dinner rolls made of?
It is absolutely easy to make dairy-free dinner rolls with no-egg in the bread machine. To make light and fluffy dinner rolls at home in the bread maker you will need basic pantry ingredients like bread flour, yeast, sugar, salt, oil, and water.
To brush the dinner rolls after baking vegan butter can be applied, with the help of a basting brush, on the top of the rolls once they are ready.

Let them cool completely on a wire rack before you use them. If you want to toast them, try buttering a skillet and letting them toast there for a few minutes.
They are delicious with homemade pulled pork, deep fried chicken sandwiches, and of course, burgers.
Why are my dinner rolls not light and fluffy?
If you make this recipe as written, your rolls should be light and fluffy. That being said, there are a few factors that can impact the texture of your rolls.
One important consideration is the type of flour you use. As previously discussed, I recommend using bread flour to create the best texture when making yeast rolls in the bread machine.
Using skim or low-fat milk can make your rolls less tender because the fat in the milk works to tenderize the bread.
While you can omit the shortening (using all butter instead), it may cause your bread to be less fluffy. This is because shortening coats the proteins in flour more efficiently than butter, thus creating superior tenderness.
How do I make my breadmaker bread soft?
There are a few things that you can do to make your breadmaker bread softer.
👩🏻🍳 Expert tips
- When making burger buns, make sure that your ingredients are at room temperature before putting them in the bread machine. This will help ensure that your dough is properly mixed and doesn’t get too stiff.
- Be sure to use the correct ingredients and measurements, as using the wrong ones can result in buns that are dense or heavy.
- If you are using a bread machine for the first time, be sure to read your machine’s manual. Each machine is a little different.
How to bake bread rolls in the oven?
Remove the tray from the oven if the dinner rolls are placed inside it for proofing. Preheat the oven to 350 deg F. Bake the dinner rolls for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Once they’re baked, remove the tray from the oven using oven mittens and apply some butter using a basting brush, while they are hot, for a nice shiny glaze.
Step By Step
For the full recipe with measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
First, start by placing the ingredients in your bread machine pan in the order they are listed in the recipe – milk, egg, honey, vegetable shortening, butter, salt, flour, yeast, and egg.
Select the dough cycle and process according to your bread machine’s manufacturer’s instructions.
Line a 2 ¾ quart baking dish with parchment paper.
When the bread machine is done, transfer the dough to a work surface. Deflate the dough by gently pressing it. This causes the gluten to relax and allows the yeast to be redistributed.
Divide it into 12 pieces. Cover the dough you aren’t working on with plastic wrap.
Form each piece into a bell by stretching and folding the sides over the center of the dough. (Keep the dough that you aren’t working with covered.)
Flip the balls so that they are seam-side down and roll into balls.
Arrange the balls in the baking dish and cover them with a clean damp kitchen towel. Let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes.
Brush the rolls with the egg and bake for about 30 minutes.
Let the rolls cool in the dish for 15 minutes.
Melt the butter in a small saucepan and add the garlic if desired.
Brush the melted butter on top of the rolls and sprinkle with the flaky salt. Serve warm.
How We Tested
In an earlier round of Lab testing, we evaluated 10 bread machine models by making banana, whole wheat, and gluten-free breads. We also sent a handful of bread machines to the homes of our experienced food writers so they could spend weeks testing their capabilities on all sorts of recipes, and checking out all their auxiliary functions. This roundup includes insights from all three sets of testing.
Testing Bread Machines for Size, Power, and Capacity
One of the early names in bread makers and still going strong, Breadman makes bread machines in several styles, including tall-loaf and rectangular-loaf. While these models don’t include extra features like higher-end options, the company is experienced and manufactures simple, solid-quality machines at mid-range prices.
Cuisinart has two bread makers in its product catalog, including a compact model that helps save on storage space and a convection heating model that can make loaves up to 2 pounds in weight. Both come with plenty of pre-programmed settings to play with and a longer warranty than other brands, and they are priced in the mid-range.
Tips & Tricks for Making This Bread Machine Rolls Recipe
- I don’t recommend substituting another liquid for the milk – it is key to tenderizing the crumb and weakening the gluten structure. Also, the proteins in it (along with the egg wash) help contribute to the browning. If you are dairy free, you could substitute a nut milk but there will be a deterioration in texture.
- Don’t “punch” the dough down. You want to shape with a more gentle hand. You can be firm, but punching it can work out too much air. Instead, gently press on it with your hands.
